Building Your Own Water Feature?

If you decide to build your own water feature, don’t be put off by inexperience. It is entirely possible to create a simple water feature with very little knowledge.

Take a look at the many beautiful water containers available today, ranging from ones that hold only a few gallons, to very large and impressive containers. To turn a bowl into a fountain, you can add one of several styles of bamboo spout and pump kits, or a small pump with bubbler or dripper. All are easy and quick to assemble.

You will also want to decide which plants to include. Water plants not only add beauty, they also play a vital role in keeping the water clear and the various elements of the entire pool in balance. You can find aquatic plants and expert assistance at local garden centers.

Before you go shopping for plants, know your water container’s size and depth, whether it is in sun or shade, and your regions approximate high and low temperatures. These factors will determine which plants will do well in your water feature.

There are aquatic plants for both sunny and shady situations. Most of the flowering ones require sun, but you can choose from several with colorful foliage to substitute for flowers if your pool or bowl is in shade.
